We are now accepting submissions for the Spring 2025 issue of New Plains Review.

New Plains Student Publishing is housed in the English Department of the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Central Oklahoma. Each year we produce two issues of the literary journal New Plains Review, one issue of The Central Dissent: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality. and one issue of the peer-reviewed undergraduate research journal 1890: A Journal of Undergraduate Research. We also host writing contests and hold multiple events open to students, staff, and faculty in addition to events open to the community.

Established in 1986, New Plains Review is a student-run literary journal published in spring and fall through the University of Central Oklahoma’s New Plains Student Publishing. Keeping with the university’s goals of both excellence and diversity, it is our mission to share with our readers thought-provoking, quality work from a diverse number of authors and artists. We receive hundreds of submissions from all over the world, and the authors and artists we publish range from well-known to the soon-to-be-discovered.

The New Plains Review seeks quality creative works ranging from poetry and prose to plays/screenplays to art and music and short films.

We will begin accepting all submissions for the 2025 issue of The Central Dissent soon.

The Central Dissent: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality is an interdisciplinary academic journal produced by New Plains Student Publishing and sponsored by the UCO's Women’s Research Center and 2SBGLTQ+ Student Center. Being the first and only academic journal focused on gender and sexuality in Oklahoma, our mission is to gather and disseminate quality research, poetry, and academic reviews that explore gender theory, gender identity, as well as how race, class, and ethnicity shape society’s expectations of the individual both currently and historically.

The Central Dissent is interested in prose, poetry, research, and art that is thoughtful and compelling regarding issues related to gender and/or sexuality, but otherwise, we do not have any specific guidelines for style or subject matter.

While we do not have any specific guidelines for style or subject matter, we look for written works that are thoughtful and compelling. We also accept audio and video submissions for online exclusive publication only. Contributors can submit multiple submissions, but we will not accept previously published work. By submitting, contributors give NPSP permission to publish works in print and online. Authors and artists with accepted submissions to our print journals receive two free copies upon publication.
